Moving around Orlando: what shapes the day
Orlando is a patchwork of very different neighborhoods, and the one you are leaving and the one you are moving into decide more about moving day than the miles between them. These are the things that come up again and again.
Downtown and around Lake Eola. Most condo and apartment towers here expect a move to be booked in advance: a reserved service elevator, a slot at the loading dock, and often a certificate of insurance from the moving company. Street parking is metered and scarce, so where the truck will stand is worth settling before the day, not on it.
The historic neighborhoods. College Park, Thornton Park, Delaney Park and Colonialtown are full of 1920s and '30s bungalows on narrow, often brick-paved streets. Expect tighter doorways and hallways than in a newer house, and a truck that may have to park a little way down the street. Both add time to every trip from the house to the truck.
Planned communities. Baldwin Park and the neighborhoods of Lake Nona tend to have community rules about moving hours, where a truck can park and how much notice the association wants. Check them at both ends of the move. The rule you only find out about on the day is the one that costs time.
East Orlando, near UCF. The apartment complexes around the university get very busy in mid-August, when fall move-in brings thousands of students in at once. If your dates have any give in them, move the week before or the week after.
Timing. I-4 runs through the middle of the city, and a loaded truck crossing it at rush hour loses time that a quiet road would not. From June to September, afternoon thunderstorms are close to daily, which is why an early start matters more here than it does in most places.
