The Central Florida Moving Checklist: 8 Weeks to Moving Day
Most of the stress in a move comes from doing everything in the final week. Spread across two months, the same work is unremarkable.
This is a local-move timeline for the Orlando area. Adjust it to your dates — the sequence matters more than the exact weeks.
Eight weeks out
Book the movers. This is the single most time-sensitive item, and it is more urgent than people expect if your date lands at the end of a month or on a weekend, when most leases turn over. Get quotes, ask what kind of estimate each one is, and read how to choose a moving company before you commit.
Start the cull. Every item you throw away now is one you do not pay to move. Garages, lofts and the back of wardrobes are where the volume hides.
Check the rules at both ends. If either address is a condo or an HOA community, find out now whether you need to reserve a lift, book a loading zone, or give notice. Some associations restrict moving to weekdays or specific hours, and finding that out the week before is genuinely disruptive.
Six weeks out
Order supplies, or decide you are not packing at all. If you want it off your hands, packing and unpacking needs booking alongside the move, not added on later.
Start with what you do not use. Off-season clothing, books, decorations, the good crockery. See how to pack a house room by room for an order that works.
Photograph anything valuable before it is packed. Ten minutes now, and a much easier conversation if something arrives damaged.
Four weeks out
Utilities. Schedule electricity, water and internet to switch. Internet in particular can need a technician visit, and appointment slots vanish at month end.
Change of address. USPS forwarding, then bank, insurance, employer, doctor, schools, and anything that auto-renews to a card with an address on it.
Measure the awkward things. Sofas, wardrobes, fridge, and the doorways and stairwells at the new place. This is when you discover something has to come apart — which is a normal part of a move, but better known now than at 8am on the day. See disassembly and reassembly.
Confirm school records and vet records if they need transferring.
Two weeks out
Pack in earnest. Label by room and by priority. "Kitchen — open first" is worth more than a numbering system nobody remembers.
Run down the freezer. Frozen food does not survive a Florida afternoon in a car.
Arrange care for children and pets on the day. Moving day is not the day to supervise either. Our guides to moving with kids and moving with pets cover the rest.
Confirm the details with your mover — arrival window, access at both ends, anything that changed since the estimate.
One week out
Pack an essentials box and keep it with you, not on the truck: medication, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic tools, coffee, toilet roll, and whatever your household genuinely cannot start a day without.
Set aside documents and valuables to travel with you. Passports, jewellery, small electronics, anything irreplaceable.
Defrost the fridge at least 24 hours ahead so it is dry before it is moved.
Confirm parking. If the truck cannot get close, the carry gets longer and the job gets slower.
The day before
- Finish the last boxes. Leave out only what you need that night and morning.
- Charge everything.
- Fill a cooler with water and put it somewhere you will not pack it. In summer here, this is not optional courtesy — it is how everyone stays functional.
- Walk each room and check cupboards, the loft and the garage.
Moving day
Start early. In June through September, the difference between a 7am start and a 10am start is the difference between loading in warm weather and loading in heat with a thunderstorm on the way.
Be reachable and let the crew work. The most useful thing you can do is answer questions quickly and keep walkways clear.
Before the truck leaves, walk the empty property. Cupboards, the loft, behind doors, the garage, the letterbox.
At the new place, check the inventory before signing anything, and get beds assembled first — after a long day, everything else can wait until morning.
When things do not go to plan
They sometimes do not. Keys are late, a lift is out of service, a storm arrives at the wrong hour. When moving day goes wrong covers what actually helps.
