How to Pack a House Room by Room

Packing goes wrong when it is done at random. Half-full boxes of mixed contents from four rooms are quick to fill and slow to unpack.

Room by room, in the right order, is the method that works.

Pack in this order

Work from least used to most used:

  1. Storage — loft, garage, shed. The highest volume and the lowest disruption.
  2. Guest and spare rooms
  3. Formal or rarely used living space
  4. Books, decorations, off-season clothes anywhere in the house
  5. Main living areas
  6. Bedrooms
  7. Kitchen
  8. Bathrooms

The kitchen and bathrooms come last because you use them until the final morning.

Declutter as the first pass

Do one pass per room deciding what goes, before any packing starts. Every item you bin is one you do not pay to move — and on a time-priced local move, volume is cost.

The garage and loft

Usually the largest job, and the one people leave too late.

Do not move what you cannot legally transport. Movers cannot take paint, petrol, propane, pesticides, aerosols or pool chemicals. That last one matters here — half-empty chlorine containers are common in Central Florida garages and will not be going on the truck. Dispose of them properly and do it early.

The kitchen

The slowest room in the house.

  • Plates travel on their edge, not stacked flat. They are far stronger that way.
  • Each glass wrapped individually, in a dish pack.
  • Keep a "first night" box: kettle, mugs, a pan, a knife, tea towels.
  • Run the freezer down in the last fortnight.
  • Bin anything opened and perishable rather than moving it.

Bedrooms

  • Hanging clothes into wardrobe boxes straight off the rail.
  • Folded clothes can stay in drawers if the chest is sturdy; wrap the whole unit. Ask your mover — some prefer drawers emptied.
  • Bedding into large boxes, and keep one set out for the first night.
  • Jewellery and anything irreplaceable travels with you, not on the truck.

Living areas

  • Screens ideally in their original boxes. Otherwise, blanket-wrapped and carried upright, never flat.
  • Photograph the back of the TV before unplugging anything.
  • Books in small boxes, spines down.
  • Lampshades come off and go in large boxes; bases wrapped separately.

Bathrooms

  • Bin anything expired. Half-used toiletries are rarely worth the risk of a leak.
  • Bag all liquids separately, then box them.
  • Keep one bathroom bag out entirely — toilet roll, soap, towels, toothbrushes, medication.

Furniture that has to come apart

Beds, sectional sofas, large desks and some wardrobes will not clear a doorway or a stairwell intact. Measure before the day.

Keep every fixing in a labelled bag taped to the item it came from. If you would rather not deal with it, disassembly and reassembly is part of what we do — and moving heavy furniture covers the rest.

Labelling that actually helps

Three things on the side of every box:

  1. The room it is going to — the destination room, not where it came from.
  2. One line of contents.
  3. A priority mark — "OPEN FIRST" on the handful you need immediately.

Colour-coded tape per room is faster still, and lets a crew place boxes correctly without asking.

The essentials box

One box that does not go on the truck: medication, chargers, documents, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic tools, coffee, toilet roll.
