Packing is the largest single block of work in a move, and the one people most reliably underestimate. A three-bedroom house is not an evening's work. It is most of a week of evenings.
So the question is worth asking properly rather than by reflex.

What professional packing actually includes
Typically:
- Materials — boxes, paper, bubble wrap, tape, specialist boxes for crockery and hanging clothes.
- The packing itself, room by room, wrapped and boxed to survive transit.
- Labelling, so boxes land in the right rooms.
- Unpacking, if you want it — boxes emptied and contents placed.
You can also take part of it. Plenty of people pack their own clothes and books and hand over the kitchen, which is the slow room.
When it is clearly worth it
You are short on time. A job, children, or a fast closing date. Packing expands to fill whatever time you have, and then some.
You have a lot of fragile things. Inherited crockery, glassware, art. Professional packers do this daily and have the right materials — see packing fragile items for the standard being met.
You physically cannot. Injury, pregnancy, mobility limits, or simply that nobody in the house can lift a full box of books.
You are helping an older parent move. Decades in one house is a large volume and an emotionally heavy job. Senior moving is a distinct service for a reason.
The move is local and time-priced. This one is counter-intuitive. On a local move billed by time, a house that is properly packed and boxed loads much faster than one still being finished at 9am. Some of what you spend on packing comes back on the loading clock — and what a local move costs explains why.
When to pack yourself
You have time and the move is small. A one-bedroom flat with a few weeks' notice is very manageable.
You want to declutter as you go. Packing is the best decluttering prompt there is. A packer will pack whatever is in front of them, including the things you meant to get rid of. If you go this route, do a decluttering pass before anyone arrives.
Budget is the deciding factor. It is real work and it is priced accordingly. Packing yourself is the largest single saving available on most moves.
The middle option most people miss
Hand over the hard parts, keep the easy ones. In practice that usually means:
- They pack: kitchen, glassware, art, mirrors, electronics.
- You pack: clothes, books, bedding, toys, linens.
You get the speed and safety where it matters, and keep the saving on everything that is just putting soft items in a box.
Questions to ask before booking
- Are materials included, or billed separately?
- Is unpacking included, or a separate service?
- How far ahead of the move do you pack?
- How are packed items covered if something breaks?
- Can I do part of it myself?
What to do before packers arrive
- Declutter. Otherwise you pay to pack and move things you do not want.
- Set aside what must not be packed — documents, medication, jewellery, the essentials box.
- Flag anything unusual — a safe, an instrument, something genuinely valuable.
- Say if something needs disassembly, so it is planned rather than improvised. See disassembly and reassembly.
